Our dream is to help and inspire as many people as possible to grow bee and butterfly friendly British wildflowers in their gardens, balconies and window boxes.
Ana and myself (Emily) started Seedball in 2013 having finished our Ph.D's in conservation, determined to make in impact in the world. We're a non-profit company whose mission is to help increase wildflower numbers and the bees and butterflies that rely on them for a food source. Growing wildflowers from seed is tricky though! They're slow to germinate and scattered seed can often be eaten by birds and insects. We came across the concept of protecting seeds in clay balls and Seedball was born!
We make the balls ourselves from a mixture of UK wildflower seeds, clay, peat-free compost and chilli powder. The outer clay protects means that the seeds are inaccessible to ants & birds, and once sufficient water has permeated the clay, the seeds inside begin to germinate - helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball. The chilli powder continues to deter slugs and snails while the seed ball slowly degrades and the seeds sprout.
Seed balls are incredibly easy to use - simply scatter on top of soil or compost (no digging or expertise required!) and nature will do the rest!
